These 6 teams are the current clubs in the Philippines Football League. The PFL is one of the newest domestic leagues in the world. It was founded in April 2017. The league was born out of the success of the national team in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup. There was a United Football League operating in Manila City, but this wasn’t exactly what the Philippine Football Federation had in mind when they came up with their original vision. Their vision was a league involving multiple municipalities, not just the greater Metro Manila area. A task force was put together to look into which communities would be able to host clubs. Conditions where things like finances, available real estate, etc. The PFF went so far as to bring Nielsen into the equation. They conducted a study that ran alongside the task force. At the end of the study, they found 13 areas that could potentially work.
The league is still in its barebones with only 1 division. Their season structure includes a Playoff bracket at the end. This consists of the top 4 teams. The PFL had 8 teams at its inception but has since lost 2 cities. The PFF wants to keep building on the progress they’ve made and incorporated more clubs. Their aim is to reach the likes of the EPL and La Liga, both of which have 20 clubs.
